Pro Circuit Launch Control Reviewed
The idea of using a Pro Circuit launch control or any launch control for that matter is to help keep the front of your bike from lifting during heavy acceleration off the start line. They consist of a spring loaded button that attaches to the fork guard and a collar that's fitted to the fork leg (see pics, click to enlarge).
On the start line you compress the forks and push the button in, while holding the button in you allow the forks to extend and the collar catches the button, locking the forks into a lower position. This keeps the front of the bike lower, allowing you to accelerate harder off the line without the front of the bike lifting.
The forks stay locked down until such time that the forks compress past that point allowing the button to release and spring back in, usually when you brake into the first corner.
I did a bit of research on the Pro Circuit Launch Control and also a couple of other brands before I decided to fit one to my RMZ. I looked at prices and features and also feedback from riders, both online in forums and also talking to riders who had them fitted to their bikes.
I did see a couple of instances with cheaper units where the button on the fork guard had broken down because of mud and dirt getting into the mechanism.
I decided on the Pro Circuit product, it was more expensive than others on the market but Pro Circuit are a reputable manufacturer and I knew the quality would be good.
Launch controls come in basically a single or double button configuration, the idea being that with two buttons you can use the higher button in situations where there's less traction on the start line ie. concrete starts, and use the lower button on higher traction dirt starts.
So the question is, do they work? In a word, yes. And they work well, you notice a big difference when you don't use it.
I've nearly finished my second season and the only maintenance I've done with it was to spray some lubricant into the button from inside the fork guard because the button was getting a bit sticky, other than that I haven't had a problem.
The Pro Circuit launch control comes with a guide on where to position the button on your fork guard based on your height, it also includes some super handy adhesive templates to stick on the guard so you know exactly where to drill.
Getting a good start is crucial when you race so any advantage you have on the start line will pay off when the gate drops. A Pro Circuit launch control is a very worthwhile investment for your bike.
