Motocross Skills Coaching

We all learn the basic motocross skills when we first start out riding and then we improve as we gain speed and confidence but for the most part your average rider relies on themself to pick up on what they may be doing wrong with their technique (this usually occurs just after you find yourself upside down under the bike after a crash!).


I used to think that coaching was just for the kids starting out and for serious racers going places with their riding but after having had some coaching I can tell you that it can make such a big difference even to an average rider like me.

Having an experienced coach watch you ride means they then can not only advise you on better techniques but also put a stop to the bad habits you may have picked up over time riding and racing. It's also very helpful to explain to them before you even start which aspects of your riding you're struggling with, they then can concentrate on feeding back to you constructive criticisms and ways to improve that particular aspect of your riding.

If you're choosing a coach for the first time ask around for other rider's opinions about who they have had coaching with. A good trainer should be able to clearly get their message across and communicate well, this is particularly important when dealing with younger riders. In motocross, skills needed by young riders starting out will be vastly different to what experienced riders may need to work on and the coach needs to be able to easily guage where a rider is at.

I recently had a coaching session with Tom Ovens from MX Evolution , Tom and Mark Fagg run the MX Evolution riding school. They do a lot of work with the junior rider development program at the Sporting Motorcycle Club (my home club) as well as one on one coaching with other riders of all skill levels.

Coaching is very worthwhile either to brush up generally on your motocross skills or to help with any particular area of your riding that you may be struggling with.
