Motocross Magazine Reviews - Transworld Motocross & Racer X

Transworld Motocross

Transworld Motocross magazine is one of the most popular US based magazines focussing purely on motocross. It follows the standard format for most MX magazines, bike shootouts and reviews of new models. There's also profiles of and interviews with factory riders, mechanics and team managers.

There's the usual product reviews and long term tests, stuff like boots and helmets that the guys use and abuse to see how they stack up. There are riding tips and hints from top riders and how to articles on bike maintenance.

It's probably pretty good value given the price for a subscription for a year.

I'll only mention this briefly because I've already had a whine about it on my Australian magazines review page and it's the amount of ads that are in these magazines. The American magazines seem to be the worst offenders, there's pages of ads first up before you even get into any content and then littered throughout and another stack of them up the back of the mag.

Racer X

Racer X isn't just a motocross magazine, they also cover some off road stuff as well. They have test and long term project bikes as well as new model tests and shootouts between different models. They're not afraid to cover quad bikes, both rider profiles and bike reviews, which seemed to be a taboo subject in any two wheeled dirt bike magazine for a long time.

The magazine has various articles about the dirt bike industry and also occasionally has a 'What ever happened to?' story which are usually pretty interesting.

Both magazines feature some top notch photography (Racer X Illustrated in particular) which we readers pretty much expect from any magazine these days.

I've read quite a few magazines over the last couple of weeks researching these reviews and I've found that the formula for a motocross magazine, or any dirt bike magazine for that matter, is fairly standard and the various publications don't vary that much. If you're only interested in motocross then you buy a subscription to a mag that only covers that, if you're interested in the whole off road dirt bike scene then you read a magazine that caters to that.
